Last week, we had special visitors: a local fourth grade class. Students in the „Design of Educational Technology“ class organized technology-based activities for the children. These included a MaKey MaKey workshop, games on the Sifteo Cubes, DigiTile on an interactive tabletop, Space Team on iPads, a Minions game operated by two people using Makey Makey, and a QR-Code based tour of the campus. In addition, children received three lectures. Head of department Prof. Armin Weinberger officially welcomed the class and gave an introduction to the department and what research is. In addition, we gave introductory talks on the two foundations of our work: (1) statistic-based empirical research and (2) computing technologies. Second year student Lara Schmitt gave an introduction to statistics, focusing on charts for presenting data (bar chart, pie chart, line chart, etc.). Before the visit, the fourth graders were asked several questions: What month were you born? What is your favorite color? What is your favorite animal? What is your favorite sport? Lara used their answers to illustrate the different graphical representations. To conclude, children formed their own embodied bar chart, standing in four columns according to which season they were born in. We took a picture from above and printed it out for them to take home. Dr Jochen Rick gave a talk on computer storage focusing on three principles: (1) Computers storage is made out of switches; (2) Using switches, you can create numbers; and (3) Using numbers, you can store anything. Children were asked, „how many switches can you buy for one cent?“ A 16GB flash card costs about €10 or 1000¢. It contains 16 GB x 1024 MB/GB * 1024 KB/MB * 1024 B/KB * 8 b/B or 137,438,953,472 switches. That’s over 100 million switches for one cent! That led to an explanation of how QR Codes work. There it is easy to see the switches: A black pixel is an on switch and a white pixel is an off switch. To personalize things, we took the children’s answers to the question and generated a QR-code for each child. Using the laser cutter of Dr Jürgen Steimle’s Embodied Interaction group, we created a wooden necklace (pictured) to house each QR code. The children got to play with cool new technologies, hopefully learned a bit and had a lot of fun. Our students got a hands-on taste of how children interact with technology.

Here is an account of one of our students, Heekyung Kim: „This is an assignment of „Design of EduTech“ using Makey Makey kit, which is made at MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten. I created the game of „Flag up down“. It is also called „청기백기“ in Korean. The target audience is specially children with ADHD. And the object is to improve concentration and of course to use the inventive kits and to experience what it is. It only needed some programming of „Scratch“(it was not difficult and just drag and add something. ;)) and the conductive material, Play Doh and some idea! When it did work as what I have implemented, I was so pleased and felt a sense of accomplishment. So nice!!! :)“

Tools and Technologies for Emotion Awareness in Computer-Mediated Collaboration and Learning

at the Alpine Rendez-Vous 2013 (ARV’2013) in Villard-­‐de-­‐Lans, Vercors, French Alps
January, 28 – February, 1st

How does the understanding of our own emotions as well as our collaborative partners’ emotions play a role in the way we interact and learn together? How to develop adaptive systems able to display emotional awareness information so as to improve the processes and outcomes of people collaborating through computers?

We invite PhD students and researchers from different disciplines (education, psychology, language sciences, and computer science) to participate in a two-days workshop on emotion and emotion awareness in computer-mediated collaboration and learning.

Liebe Studierende,

die Universität des Saarlandes schreibt erstmalig den „Preis für besonderes studentisches Engagement“ aus.

Der Preis ist mit 1.000,- Euro dotiert und kann bei qualitativ gleichwertigen Bewerbungen durch die Jury geteilt werden. Der Preis wird anlässlich der Vorstellung des AStA in der zentralen Eröffnungsfeier des akademischen Jahres der Universität des Saarlandes vergeben.

Der Preis zeichnet das besondere persönliche Engagement von Studierenden aus: Prämiert werden Projekte von Studierenden, die durch ihre Reichweite und Kontinuität anderen Studierenden der Universität zu Gute kommen.

Inhaltlich sind keine Grenzen gesetzt: Gewürdigt werden können beispielsweise herausragende Arbeit in Uni-internen Gremien, die überragende Leitung von Arbeitskreisen, die Organisation von Veranstaltungen, die Vermittlung von Praxisnähe, soziales Engagement für Kommilitonen aber auch innovative, neuartige Konzepte und deren Umsetzung.
Prämiert werden können sowohl aktuelle als auch bereits abgeschlossene Projekte.

Teilnahmeberechtigt sind Einzelpersonen oder Studierenden-Teams mit den oben genannten Voraussetzungen.
Bewerben können sich alle Studierenden der Universität des Saarlandes; zusätzlich sind alle Mitglieder der Saar-Uni aufgerufen, preiswürdige Studierende zu nominieren.

Einladung zur Einführungsveranstaltung des „EduTech“-Masters am 31.5.2012 ab 17.00

Du möchtest gerne einen Master studieren, der eine hohe Interdisziplinarität und gute Berufschancen hat?
Du würdest gerne theoretisches Wissen mit innovativen praktischen Ansätzen vereinen?
Dann ist der EduTech-Master an der Universität des Saarlandes genau das Richtige für dich!

Der Lehrstuhl „Bildungstechnologie und Wissensmanagement“ hat in Zusammenarbeit mit dem DFKI und der HTW ein Curriculum entwickelt, welches Studierenden ermöglichen soll nicht nur mit neuesten Technologien zu arbeiten, sondern diese auch selbstständig für aktuelle Forschung im Rahmen der Lehr- und Lernforschung einzusetzen.

Wir stellen den Studiengang, sowie einige in den letzten zwei Semestern entstandene Projekte, im Rahmen einer Einführungsveranstaltung am 31.5.2012 ab 17.00 in Gebäude C5 4 Raum 1.15, vor und würden uns sehr über euer Kommen freuen!

We are planning a new Master Program called „Instructional Technology and Design“, which has passed the faculty council. The new commercial Master Program will be 100% online and is aimed at professionals who would like to study single modules or complete a MSc degree to learn about how to design, apply, and evaluate technology-enhanced learning scenarios.

We suggest to attend the introduction of the University President, Prof. Linneweber at 11 h in the Audimax and the Info-Basar following that. Introduction to the EduTech Master Programm commences on the 18. at 10 h s.t. in the EduTech Lab 1.15 (Building C5 4).
The EduTech introduction week will also cover Wednesday and Thursday. More information on the 18.
